1) Kumai is the bear, not the miko, and he is male.

2) "The last few episodes" my foot: that series started going downhill since episode 2, right after the absolute blast that was episode 1 made my hopes for it soar higher than ever (i.e. the exact opposite of many other series i've watched)

Nah, I enjoyed it right up until the final arc completely invalidated every bit of progress that had been made throughout the rest of the show. It remained one of my favorite shows of that season until near the end, when they threw everything down the drain.
